American Sport Fish Hatchery stocks fathead minnows. These minnows are best when stocked in new ponds. They are excellent forage for young bass.

Hand scooping up fathead minnows from fishing net. These minnows are typically stocked into new ponds at the same time as bluegill and shellcracker. In a newly-stocked pond, they provide abundant forage for the young bass because the minnows spawn heavily in the spring before the bluegill begin spawning.

The minnows can provide a significant boost in growth to a pond’s bass and bluegill populations. Typically, the young bass will eat all of the minnows in a pond within a year.

We do not recommend fathead minnows for established bass and bluegill ponds because the bass typically eliminates the minnows before they have an opportunity to spawn.
