Threadfin shad have proven to be an excellent forage fish for largemouth bass in fertile lakes and ponds. Threadfin rarely exceeds 5 to 7 inches in length, making them an ideal-size food item for almost all bass. They are schooling, filter-feeding baitfish that swim through the open water of the lake.
Threadfin are sexually mature at 2 to 2 ½ inches and spawning has been documented from March through September in the South. One load (5,000 to 7,000 fish) is usually recommended for each 10 surface acres. They can be stocked in spring, summer, or fall.
