Building a pond this spring?  Have you carefully engineered a pipe system for the role it plays in the dam?  The pipe’s job is orderly release of “normal” rain.  Big runoff is discharged out the emergency spillway. A well-designed pipe can contribute features beneficial to your lake management strategy.  Consider a valve to periodically drain stagnant water off the bottom.  If the pond will serve as a hatchery for supplemental forage, you may want the option to drain it for seasonal maintenance.  Don’t forget anti-seep collars.  Install a trash screen over the riser pipe to prevent debris from washing-in and clogging the pipe.  Schedule regular maintenance inspections to test valves and potential weak points on pipe joints.  We can refer you to a veteran dirt contractor if you need consultation.
