Is Plankton Important to Your Pond?
Most folks enjoy admiring clear water. They can see fish, vegetation, and the bottom six feet deep. We regret spoiling the view, but clear water is missing an important food source beneficial to aquatic life.
Clear water lacks plankton, microscopic organisms that makeup the first level of a pond’s food chain. Healthy plankton levels can double and even triple productivity of a pond by providing valuable nutrition for newly spawned fish. Since plankton
thrives in surface zones, it also serves as a light barrier to block sunlight from penetrating to the bottom and stimulating vegetation growth. We desire visibility of 18 to 24 inches.
If your pond is void of nutrients that promote plankton, ask us about fertilization. We can schedule application when water temps reach a sustained 60 degrees.
