Pond seepage can be one of the most frustrating and difficult conditions to correct in pond construction.  One day the pond is full.  Thirty days later the water level has dropped three feet or you notice a wet spot behind the dam.

Water may have seeped straight down through porous soils.  In some cases, it moves through a vulnerable spot in the dam.  If there is a weak spot, water will find it.

The best way to prevent such complications is soil testing, soil testing, soil testing.  Contact NRCS agents for referrals to dirt contractors.  Local contractors know your soils and where to find necessary clay zones.  They’ll dig test trenches to gather quality material.  Don’t take shortcuts in this phase.  It could cause you to build the pond “twice”.
